The Mini-shows are Coming
As I alluded to in my previous aside, you need to start preparing for new ways to have advertising in your face in the TiVo age. Here’s another bright idea from some other stupid executive somewhere in La-la land. It really is only a matter of time before they start showing ads during the show or as a ticker down the bottom…

Man, television is in a real rush to destroy itself. Pretty soon I’m only going to watch stuff on DVD or On Demand just to get away from crap like this.
I wonder, how much would basic cable cost if there were no ads on any channel? Has that been calculated? Though I suppose I’m looking at it from the wrong angle–it’s not so much that the television producers need the advertising money as it is the advertisers need the national exposure of television commercials.

Cable would go up because they wouldn’t get their cash for those horrible local commercials they overlay the national ads with at times. Even if they did get rid of them, then we get in show ads either as pop-ups, product placement or something straight out of The Truman Show where they suddenly stop and do a product ad for beer, dishwashing soap or feminine hygiene products…

Speaking of horrible local commercials, I’ve come to the decision that if I ever meet Bob (of Bob’s Furniture) in the street, I’m going to hurt him somehow. In whatever way I can. Physically, emotionally, I don’t know. And then, when he’s whimpering on the ground, I’m going to demand he explain his relationship to the irritating blonde sprite in his ads. Is she his wife? Business partner? Mistress? Spokesmodel? What’s her deal?
And then I’d beat him senseless.

Tell us how you really feel!
Funny thing about Bob… Ed and I were talking about commercials that annoy us the other night and I cited the Bob’s ones and the American Idol Young-old Man Ford ads. Bob is saving so much money on his crappy furniture, he can inundate you with crappy, low production value ads. Of course, you must realize that all furniture ads are annoying and horrible. Look no further than Bernie & Phyl or Jordan’s. They all annoy.
BTW – When I speak of local commercials, I mean the really local ones like Hingham Jewelers or Rockland Athletic Supply, etc. You know, the ones that look like they were filmed by the local High School A/V squad…

Jason – If you ever knock Bob down – please call me so I can join in the fun. I might even let him rest his head on a comfy Tempurpedic mattress (no, not one of his knock-off Bob-o-pedics.) That would be cruel.

Hey, Jordan’s Furniture used to have good ads, back when they would make fun of other ads–like the Jetta ad where everything is in rhythm, or the Blue Man Group parody…they even had a Simpsons parody!
The Jordan’s ads set the bar really high, and they’re probably part of the reason I hate Bob’s ads so much. Though Jordan’s ads have been boring lately. Boring, but not SUPREMELY IRRITATING.

Hell no! Jordan’s ads are just as annoying because they don’t have their own ideas. They just rip-off everyone elses. If their ads were really parodies, wouldn’t they be funnier or more tongue-in-cheek? Don’t even get me started on their TV tie-in spots for the show that is currently on, especially the Lost and CSI ones.
That said, they rank third behind B&P with Bob being the worst.

I like the Jordan’s ads…but in any event, they haven’t even done a parody ad in a while. Just some woman talking about sleep technicians or whatever.
I don’t mind that Italian furniture company–they have pretty straightforward ads. “Hi, we have furniture, come check us out.”

I saw a new Jordan’s “parody” ad last week. It was copying the Guinness guy’s shouting “Brilliant” and used the same animation style, etc. I saw the regular ads too and I was hoping they’d go that route for a while, but no joy.

The fact that these ads have garnered a discussion this lengthy means they must be doing something right. You always remember what you hate.

There is no such thing as bad publicity….those ads, which are like fingernails across the chalkboard have everyone talking….just weird that “They Might Be Giants” has been reduced to Dunkin Donuts ads….

@Ed – Yeah, they make me remember I will never buy furniture from most of them. If I had to settle on one, it would probably be Jordan’s as they are the least annoying of the three and have the highest quality.
@Juice – They Might Be Giants… ah, memories. I was surprised to find they do children’s DVDs too. I guess Joe got one for Colin.

@Ed—Whenever we see a Bob’s ad and I make fun of it, Karen always mutters that she will never buy anything from Bob because she hates his ads so much.
Plus, one of our friends bought a Bob-o-pedic bed that turned out to have bedbugs.
