Fanboy Fodder 8.2
I am going with that title for now. “Fanboy” because I feel like one for writing even the shortest of short reviews about the comics on which I blow my pesos. “Fodder” because only other fanboys would find these thoughts even remotely interesting. The eight dot two is simply short for week 2 of the month of August. Due to the way I set up my bloggy blog, I have to use a unique name for each post within a given month, plus it just enhances the geek factor.
Maybe I can get in some good debates with someone and make this little corner of the blog worth it. If not, my fanboydom will forever be pasted on the Internet. Anyway, let’s get the geekery over with already…
Wolverine: Origins #5
Such a cool cover… with nothing inside to back it up. Well, that’s a little too harsh, but it was utterly stupid until the end, which convinced me to give the next arc a shot. The first five issues were terribly boring and didn’t make much sense. Wolvie fights Nuke. Wolvie fights Captain America. Wolvie fights Cyclops, Emma Frost and Hellion — BTW: WTF? Why exactly was he here? — and then we get the good bit. It seems Logan has a son out there in the world, who hates him and he has to find. Well, you know what? The guy has been around a loooong time, so I’m sure there are some other spawn too. This should be no shock, but it’s enough of a hook to keep me going with this. I had planned on ending this series with this ish, but I guess I gotta keep going. If they make Hellion his son, well… that’s just plain stupid, but it would explain his presence. Nah, they won’t be that stupid.
New X-Men #29
Well, this book has been pretty good for its run thru the twenties. I have to say, I don’t understand why they keep changing the name — I thought they were good with bringing back New Mutants — other than to confuse everyone with the X-Men; to New X-Men; back to X-Men so this can become New X-Men. Don’t worry about it. This is where Hellion belongs and I’d like to see them continue to tear him down. Kill off some more of his former teammates. Humble the punk! Love the stuff with Nimrod and Forge and very happy they killed off Reverend Stryker, but bummed about killing Jay Guthrie. That Guthrie clan can’t seem to catch a break. Anyway, with the way they have been knocking off muties lately, in this book and the others, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone really does bite it next ish.
Ultimate X-Men #73
Okay, this book has been getting real boring over the last dozen issues or so. So much so that I can barely remember what’s happened. This Magician guy is at the forefront when they should be focusing on Jean Grey and the Phoenix. Good last page though, so get with the gettin’ already or I’m a gonna get with the goin’. This book was one of my favoring Ultimate titles and now it is my least. What up with that? I’ll tell you, bad writers. Get us someone good back please. Colossus is gay, Beast is dead, Rogue has dead Gambit’s powers… what have you done for me lately? What happened to Bryan Singer and his boy’s writing an arc for this book? Too big for that with working on Supes I guess…
Squadron Supreme #6
Man, the Supreme Power MAX series that preceded this book was way better, if only for the gratuitous nudity and cussing. J. Michael Straczynski had way more freedom under the MAX banner to tell tales that were new and interesting. It was gritty and no-holds-barred. Now, it just feels like a dysfunctional Avengers book. I thought there was a place for titles under the MAX banner. The MAX Punisher book was great for awhile too because he seemed to belong there, but I stopped that one after the Russia arc and I don’t remember why. So, SP got a lot of critical and fan praise, Marvel went and messed up a good thing by bringing it to the underaged — who were prolly already reading it anyway (look, boobies kids) — masses as a regular age book. I need to read the Hyperion and Nighthawk mini’s to get my MAX on, but after that, there’s nothing. Maybe Redstone kicking Hyperion’s ass again will spice it back up, but I doubt it. This one probably won’t keep my attention much longer.
Ultimate Spider-man Annual #2
Hey, the return of Ultimate Moon Knight! That’s cool. Killed the crooked cop-lady and made the Kingpin cry, that’s cool. Ultimate Punisher is a let-down (first book I’ve read with him as I haven’t been reading Ult Spidey pre-ish early 70-something) and Ultimate Daredevil is a pr!ck. What else? Hmm… the dialogue wasn’t great for a Brian Michael Bendis book. I guess I’m just spoiled by his always incredible issues of Powers and his usual brilliance in the regular Ultimate Spider-man and the New Avengers. Feel like I wasted my rubles on an Annual, which is of course what they want you to do.
Shrugged #2
This book has been very fun so far. I am very interested to see where Michael Turner goes with this concept. If you are a casual fan and got this far down this post, I’d recommend you pick this up. The concept is that little angel and devil you have on your shoulders and what happens if you started listening to them, or rather, they really existed and started exerting a more active role in your life. Very cool and the What If Mafia are very funny and a clever little detail so far.
That’s it for this week. I also picked up Civil War Frontline #5, Ms. Marvel #6 (likely a goner after CW finishes up) and Fathom #10. I haven’t started in on any CW books yet, so I’ll likely get there soon. The same goes for Fathom, which I likely won’t get to soon.

The only thing I’m reading from the Big Two is Wolverine: Origins (not counting the recently concluded Elric: Making of a Sorcerer from DC).
I have to agree, Origins was weak. For one thing, Dillon—while a great artist—is all wrong for Wolverine. Wolverine needs someone like Marc Silvestri or Sam Kieth, who can bring the right chaotic, slashy edge. Dillon seems more like a Superman artist to me.
As for the story…I started reading this because it was cool to see Wolverine back in the brown outfit. But that’s not enough of a reason to keep reading, so I’m probably done with this comic for now.

Yeah, I agree with you on the artist. His style doesn’t seem to really fit a Wolverine book.
I forgot one other element of that issue that bothered me. I thought it would be cool if he was carrying around the one weapon that can absolutely kill him dead while on this adventure in this book. How cool would that be knowing that at any given moment, someone could grab that thing and potentially end him. Not that they’d ever do it, but it seems lame to put it in Cyclop’s hands should the time ever come.
If #6 isn’t great, I’m dropping it. The arc be damned.

Not to mention, giving Cyclops the sword is similar to Superman giving Batman the kryptonite ring.

Yeah, that’s a good observation. I think that ring got destroyed by the Superman from Earth 2 in the Infinite Crisis. That’s not to say there isn’t other green K around to replace it…
