Fanboy Fodder 9.3

Astonishing X-Men #17 coverBig week to make up for the previous two light weeks. It all comes around to bite the wallet and this next week, really this week, which will be 9.4, is another big one.

Anyway, I didn’t get a chance to read the books last weekend, so I was able to read a couple during the week and I finished off the rest tonight. Yup, a true geek on a Friday night. Sitting home and reading comic books and now writing a blog post in the post midnight hours.

Astonishing X-Men #17 Had to lead with this book again. I mean, look at that cover! Look at who writes the book (Joss Whedon)! Look at the art inside the book! If this isn’t the best comic on the stands right now, then it has to be damned close. The handling of Wolverine has me cracking up and it should be evident from the cover that John Cassaday plays a huge part in making it work. The last panel rocked.

Runaways #20 Next book up is the book J... Continue reading »

The Halo Effect

I’m sure all my gamer readers, all two of you, have already read about this, but just in case, more Halo games on the way. I wonder if the Age of Empires developer’s game will be like that where you build up a side, human or Covenant, and then try to take over. Could be good, but then again, I get bored of those types of games quickly.

Bucked by Zebras

Gillette Stadium

I know this is probably a day or two late, but I got caught up in watching the telly on Monday night and I just wasn’t up for posting immediately upon returning home from the game on Sunday night. The good news is this is just a short post. The bad news is the Pats lost the game, but you already knew that.

That there picture was taken by my shiny new Motorola Razr. Yup, that’s the highest setting and resolution, resized down and trimmed to fit here. Looks like crap, no? Well, that’s because it is. I wonder why they even bother with the cameras in the phones. They all suck. My old phone took slightly more crappy photos than this one (remember the shot of the grackle?). I understand that distance shots won’t be great, but c’mon, that is some bad stuff. I guess it will take a couple more years. Not the... Continue reading »

Tellyman: Week One

Dwight Schrute bobbleheadFor most of us, this week kicked off the first week of the new television season. Sorry, I don’t watch any of the crap on FOX, although that will change when 24 starts up until they kill off Eddie.

Oops, check that… I have watched the first two episodes of ‘Til Death. The giant from Ray doesn’t nothing for me, but I was interested to see what Eddie Kaye Thomas would do on the show and that Kat Foster, who plays his wife, is a little cutie. Thomas is playing it too straight as an assistant principal at the school in which the giant next door neighbor teaches. Of course, the show sucks much ass and I wasted 44 minutes — thank you Media Center — of my life. I knew it would, but I had to make sure. I’m still bitter that Off Centre was cancelled over on UPN, but whatever.

Eddie Izzard on 24

24Fox just found a way to get me to watch 24 this season, well at least try to watch it…again. Where Elisha Cuthbert failed, Eddie Izzard may succeed. As I stated in the My Super Ex-Girlfriend review, I am a big fan. I’m guessing he’s going to channel his inner *action transvestite* for the role as new baddie Darren McCarthy.

Take down the Citgo sign?

I suppose I am helping this idiot in a very, very, very small way — after all, my readership sux — but I can’t help but post a link to this story on boston.com about the Citgo sign. You know, I’m not entirely certain Chavez isn’t a little bit right about Bush being the devil and I think this is further proof of a politician doing anything to get press, but whatevs…

Here’s a link to the Citgo web site page about the sign.

Xbox 360 in 1080p

Xbox 360

Paul Thurrott has an item on WinInfo about Microsoft releasing the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 for only $170 this Fall. What is more interesting to me is that a 360 firmware update will boost the max resolution of the 360 from 1080i to 1080p. This is news, and as Paul says, the last big differentiator between PS3 and the 360.

Is Sony further doomed? Not in the least. The Sony zealots will still shell out gobs of cake for a PS3, but Microsoft just made their argument even more compelling. I’m just a little happier in that this will help justify buying a 1080p HD set when I get a big one soonish. Even though television programming won’t be broadcast at that level for years to come, at least there could be some earlier benefit in the greater cost over the 720p sets. As it stands now, it’s about an $800 difference for the size set I am looking at. I bet the earliest we see a 1080p game is late 2007 though.

Falling Away With You

Casino Royale teaster posterWouldn’t you say it is rather ironic that while I was writing my Summer wrap-ups last week it was feeling like Autumn and as I write my Autumn preview this week it has felt like Summer? I guess that’s how we roll here in New England.

Has the wacky weather been a contributing factor in the huge downturn in readers over the past few weeks here at OB1og as well? Certainly can’t be because I haven’t been posting like Ed or Jason. Of course, Ed isn’t posting for a good reason and then there is Jason not posting for a secret... Continue reading »

Peter is Back!

He’s only part-time, but I am so happy to see this day. Peter Gammons is one of my favorite writers of all time, and I’m not just talking sports. I shed a couple tears reading his piece, “One of the luckiest people on the earth.” You should read it too.

I’m sorry I wasn’t home to see him on air. Hopefully they’ll repeat tonight.

Fanboy Fodder 9.2

Wolverine: Origins #6 cover (Joe Q version)Didn’t I write just last time out that it was unlikely I’d buy another week of comics and be able to read them all? Well, it’s still true, but this week was a close one… and by one, I mean there was only one Civil War (CW) tie-in that I couldn’t read. The comic store had a CW postcard dropped in the bad and it looks like they are readjusting the schedule slightly due to late books and also adding on the end. Sucker isn’t finishing up until at least February at this point.

So, pulling out that CW issue — Ms. Marvel #7 — leaves me with six comics to review again. Now that I have pretty much gotten thru a month of introductions, I’ll be shortening the blurbs. Sounds like a good reason, but really, I’m feeling lazy and would rather not write much about them.

Wolverine: Origins #6 I hate to lead with this one, but it ... Continue reading »
