Fall Fantasy Sports
Well, the new season of fantasy sports started today, which also means the new season of a real sport started today. Of course, that sport is football and your New England Patriots survived a close game with the Buffalo Bills to win 19-17. I’ll tell you, I wasn’t feeling real confident after the Bills were up 7-0 after 12 seconds of play, but Tom Terrific marched them down the field on the next possession to tie it up. Maroney looked pretty good. Dillon better watch his back. At least they started off with a win.
As for my fantasy squad, well they didn’t fair so well. Looks like I won’t be starting off with a win. Carson Palmer laid a big egg today, so that’s pretty much what is killing me right now. Travis Henry getting the TD touches instead of Chris Brown also does not help. For those that are interested, here’s my team:
- QB: Carson Palmer, Jake Delhomme
- RB: Edgerrin James, Willis McGahee, Chris Brown, Cedric Benson
- WR: Marvin Harrison, Hines Ward, Muhsin Muhammad, Laveranues Coles, Ben Watson, Mark Clayton
- DEF: Seattle, New England
- K: Nate Kaeding, Matt Stover
- HC: Denver, St. Louis
We draft 2 QB, 4 RB, 6 WR/TE, 2 DEF, 2 K and 2 HC and start one of each except 2 RB, 2 WR/TE and 1 RB/WR/TE. TE and WR are the same category, so only five or six TE were actually drafted. Head Coach simply gets you 4 points for a W. I’ll likely be putting in a waiver claim for Travis Henry and dropping Mark Clayton this week. We can only make 3 transactions for the entire year. If a player goes on IR, you can replace him for free, but only if he is a WR/RB/TE because QB, K and DEF are team spots, i.e. I actually drafted Cincy QB’s and San Diego K’s. The reason being if they go down during the game, you still get the backup’s points. Last year I lost in the Super Bowl, so we’ll see where this year brings me.
I am also doing Juice’s Survival Pool and I made it thru Week 1 with Arizona as my pick. Last year I lost Week 1 and didn’t lose again the rest of the year. The third item for the Fall is a Team FFL where you draft three NFL teams and you get points on the weekly differentials. I have Carolina, Arizona and Detroit, so I am -10 to start the season. I didn’t do a Pick ‘Em pool this year because I don’t know why. Maybe just because of money. The three things I am doing are $115 total, so I don’t need to add another $60 on top for another pool. I think this way I have a decent chance to break even. I did do a public/free Pick ‘Em for the fun of it and it is probably a good thing I didn’t pay. I am 5 for 16 with 3 games to go, so not a good week for me by far!
As for the past season’s fantasy sports, I finished second in my two public baseball leagues, so I had byes this week. In my own league, I finished third and it looks like I am going to win my first playoff round and have to face Noelle. If my team holds out, it will be lucky and I doubt I win on luck again. On the other side, my friend Jay will face off against Mookie. Mook looks pretty unstoppable, but if anyone has a chance to beat him, it is Noelle as they split the regular season series 1-1-1. The tie was only because Howry gave up a grand slam in a Sunday night to lose ERA for Noelle.
Unfortunately, we had more drama than usual in my league, so this is likely the last year for the keeper league. It has lasted five years, but all good things must come to an end and I am going to miss my keeper guys: Pujols, Manny, Berkman, Utley, Peavy and Sheets (probably) next year. I figure I’ll offer a free, public league with a similar setup and those that want to play can play for fun and the regular rules.
Finally, and most shocking, I have been doing fairly well in the golf league I previously wrote about. Well, that was up until two weeks ago when I had the notion of writing about it here. I even took screenshots to show off, which I will still present, but since then I have had two bad weeks. I have won a week, so that’s half my money back, but I was leading the overall standings for the second-half within our league and that would get me my other half back and a little more. These two bad weeks have probably sunk that, which sucks because I was leading for almost all the weeks. In addition to that, I was huge for overall on Yahoo!
Consider that “fantasy expert” Funston is in the 62,000 for the second half, there must be — without doing the real math — at least 100,000 people in this thing and I am at 380 here. I actually moved up halfway thru the next tournament to 236 before I started the drop. Unbelievable!
Here’s the standings for the full season:
