Fanboy Fodder 9.2
Didn’t I write just last time out that it was unlikely I’d buy another week of comics and be able to read them all? Well, it’s still true, but this week was a close one… and by one, I mean there was only one Civil War (CW) tie-in that I couldn’t read. The comic store had a CW postcard dropped in the bad and it looks like they are readjusting the schedule slightly due to late books and also adding on the end. Sucker isn’t finishing up until at least February at this point.
So, pulling out that CW issue — Ms. Marvel #7 — leaves me with six comics to review again. Now that I have pretty much gotten thru a month of introductions, I’ll be shortening the blurbs. Sounds like a good reason, but really, I’m feeling lazy and would rather not write much about them.
Wolverine: Origins #6
I hate to lead with this one, but it has the best cover of the week (I find it amusing that the book’s artist gets the Variant cover while Joe Z provides the regular cover; shouldn’t this be reversed?). Anyway, this book is exhibit A of what is pissing me off lately. A whole lot of pages of nothing, as in nothing happening. I feel like too many stories are unfolding too slowly these days and this issue is a prime example. Weren’t we supposed to get on with finding Logan’s son? Yeah, I thought so, but instead, let’s bring in Omega Red for a few issues to slow everything down, okay? Yeah, I am reevaluating my decision from last issue already. In fact, I’m flipping thru the next issue in the shop before I buy.
Ultimate X-Men #74
I am already invested in this series since issue one, so it is hard not to buy, but this next arc better be good because Magician blows. They should have killed his ass for real rather than have him make them believe he died just to escape. Oh, and Professor Xavier is gonna get laid by Lillandra. Good for you Chuck. Nice to see Jean kick a tiny bit of ass, even though it wasn’t technically worth shite, but more Phoenix and fast please. Who am I kidding? I probably won’t drop this one no matter how much it starts to suck.
New X-Men #30
Unless I blinked and missed it, no one bought it as promised. I thought Mercury was going to, but she just lost some substance into the new Nimrod body which conveniently overwrote the overwritten programming making him hunt mutants again. How’d that happen? Well, Forge got the new body to protect mutants, but of course the kids stupidly attacked it as soon as they saw it and that screwed that. Feels like an episode of Three’s Company…
Star Wars: Legacy #3
I haven’t chatted this one up yet, but basically it is Star Wars in the future. I forget how far, but Luke is long dead and this follows a future Skywalker that has turned his back on the Jedi and become a bounty hunter. So far, it’s been a decent setup and I hope I don’t tire of this series like I have of every other continuing Star Wars comic before it. The minis tend to be good, but the ongoing lose steam after a while. Luke just showed up in Jedi spirit form for the first time to remind Cade of his destiny, so we’ll see how it goes. The guy seems pretty uncaring as he has already turned in a Jedi for a bounty, alive instead of dead though, and he threatened to blow his own head off if Luke didn’t piss off. If you like Star Wars, it’s probably worth checking out.
G.I. Joe: America’s Elite #15
Total fluff issue because it sets up the Phoenix Guard to attach Joe HQ next issue. Snake Eyes is pure commando instead of ninja now and I’m not sure I like that, but we’ll see. I still like where they are going with this even though I don’t understand how the Phoenix Guard guys believe it is okay to attack another US team. It’s not like they have been portrayed as rogue by the disguised Cobra Commander. Do teams really take each other down to take over their budget, etc.?
Girls #17
I was complaining about the slowness of this series last month, but this issue picked up the story a bit. I felt like more progress was made between what the women were doing and how it is impacting the men. As for the Girls, a half dozen of them took down a grizzly bear with their bare hands, and of course, naked. Punched the crap out of him to protect the untapped sperm source known as the sheriff. I’ll give it until at least issue 20 before chopping.
