Fanboy Fodder 9.3
Big week to make up for the previous two light weeks. It all comes around to bite the wallet and this next week, really this week, which will be 9.4, is another big one.
Anyway, I didn’t get a chance to read the books last weekend, so I was able to read a couple during the week and I finished off the rest tonight. Yup, a true geek on a Friday night. Sitting home and reading comic books and now writing a blog post in the post midnight hours.
Astonishing X-Men #17
Had to lead with this book again. I mean, look at that cover! Look at who writes the book (Joss Whedon)! Look at the art inside the book! If this isn’t the best comic on the stands right now, then it has to be damned close. The handling of Wolverine has me cracking up and it should be evident from the cover that John Cassaday plays a huge part in making it work. The last panel rocked.
Runaways #20
Next book up is the book Joss Whedon will be writing once his stint on Astonishing is done. This is sort of old news at this point, but I am excited to see where he takes us. Given that these kids in the book already seem like a Scooby gang, it will be fun to see Joss put his spin on them. As for this issue in particular, s’okay. I sorta forget they were fighting some big demon thing from last time, but it was cool to see Molly put the kibosh on him after a caffeine injection from Nico. I think Molly is my favorite character.
Iron Man #12
Wraps up the “Execute Program” arc; pretty easily I might add. Yeah, so Tony built the armor on the loose and knows the weaknesses, but c’mon, it was a little too easy. Some of those suits kicked ass too, so it was too bad he wrecked them all. I guess that’s part of the fun with the book though, all the tech that flows thru it over time. Next up is Civil War tie-ins I suppose.
Ultimate Fantastic Four #34
Okay, so more continuation of this other-world/dimension talk that is hard to follow. At least at one point they could understand each other, thus I could understand. I get most of it, it is just annoying. So far, still another typical comic showdown of misunderstanding between the good guys and then the Big Bad shows up. Now, this guy kicked some ass in a Big Bad way. Maybe I was too harsh on Mike Carey last ish because this one was better, but I’m kinda waiting until it is over.
Wetworks #1
The return of Whilce Portacio and one of the original Image Comics titles! Hmm, we have Mike Carey as a writer on this one too. Man, this guy is working hard, huh? Ult FF, X-Men and now Wetworks. He probably writes other stuff too as many of them do, but why are they books I buy? Obviously the publishers think he’s good, so why am I not seeing it? As a first issue goes, there’s some setup here, but I’m not so sure it is well done. I’m sure I am missing chapters of the Wetworks story between now and forever ago. I got 15 issues into the original series and I’d have to do some serious digging to find out if there’s more. Anyway, this was one of my favorites when Image launched because of Whilce’s awesome art, so I am giving it a shot. I think his style now isn’t as crisp as the past, but we saw that on his X-Force run too. I think it is more so he can get books out the door as he was one of those that always took too damn long.
X-Men: First Class #1
Okay, we are going to look at early, original five X-Men stories with a new spin… or something. A reimagining? Whatever they are doing, the first issue is decent and they have seven more to cock it up. These stories take place in current time, they reference e-mail and Xbox, but we know it isn’t the same as the sixties history and it would seem they won’t re-tell stories from the regular continuity. I’m along for the ride as I dig Cruz’s art and I am an X-Fanboy.
Sensational Spider-Man #30
Other than the decent Angel Medina art, this book is hit or miss. Issue #28, as told thru the eyes of one of Peter Parker’s students, was a solid issue in both story and art. These last two are just good art and mediocre story. Yes, we know he came out as Spidey, so let’s have every one of his rogues go after him with a half-assed plan. Doc Ock muttering about him being 15 years old when they first fought was amusing in #28, but the Chameleon, Scarecrow, Electro and a couple other guys I never heard of don’t really have decent reasoning going on here. Can we not do the obvious?
Moon Knight #5
David Finch’s pencils are awesome, but the book is so dark it isn’t always easy to follow all the panels. Stuff is suddenly moving along, so I expect the next issue that concludes the arc to set the stage for the real direction of the book. He’s all broke down now, so let’s build him up and let him go. I bet I don’t make twelve issues of this book, but we’ll see.
G.I. Joe: Special Missions #1
Remember the original SM books by Marvel? I do because back when Joe books were pretty much all I read, it was exciting to get a second title. Nowadays, there are always more than one title for pretty much everything and I am always into a lot of stuff, so I try to be more picky, even though I tend to fail for a bit at letting go. There are two stories in this one and while the first was okay, I didn’t bother with the second. Going to have to flip thru this in the store for future issues to see if it will interest me.
Purchased and not read due to Civil War reading-behindness are: Civil War #4, Civil War: X-Men #3, Wolverine #46 and X-Factor #11. I also picked up Exiles #86 and I am just behind on that book.
