Stupid Is As Wynn Does
Steve Wynn blows $139 million with his elbow. Want more inside scoop? Check Nora Ephron’s blog post about it.
This isn’t something I would normally post about, but Noelle sent me the link to the story tonight and it got me thinking. This kind of thing is proof to me that no normal person, billionaire or otherwise, should be trusted to own precious works of art. Well, they can own them, but please put them in museums so that we can all enjoy them.
It will have a nice side effect of protection from stupidity.

I still can’t get over Wynn’s reaction to ruining a painting worth the GNP of a third world country. Granted, when you can afford to have multiple paintings by Picasso and Matisse hanging in your hotels (never mind actually owning said hotels), I guess it’s like one of us common folk accidentally sitting on an expensive pair of Oakleys!

Tru dat, except I’d probably be a lot more pissed about sitting on my Oakleys than he seemed to be about ripping the painting! I guess having too much money makes you numb?
Did you see the painting that was ripped when you stayed at The Wynn last Spring?

I don’t know if his reaction was one of nonchalance so much as it was so far beyond the pale of embarrassment, rage, and disbelief that you just can’t do anything but stand there agape.

@Sean: I don’t think I saw that particular painting, but there was a Picasso hanging in the registration lobby!
@Jason: I agree that he was probably embarrassed by his blunder, but I don’t think it had anything to do with the multi-million dollar price tag. Hey, what’s $139 million to a billionaire anyway?!!
For those of you who don’t know, I had the opportunity to stay at the Wynn for a conference. It’s an amazing hotel.

@JFCC: I think it was one of nonchalance more than shock/agape. Whether it was to save face in front of his guests and later toss one of his hotel rooms in rage like a rock star, I don’t know…
