Four jacks
Juice sent a link out via e-mail tonight and I figured I’d post it — you need to read the full post to get the link — for the two of you probably not on his e-mail list. It is the new SportsCenter clip of David Ortiz and Jorge Posada. If it isn’t the first video in the player/list, look for it. It is entitled “Betrayal.” Wally’s reaction is priceless.
I almost wish I didn’t see this, because while funny and clever, it is a little disturbing. I mean, the thought that Papi thought it was okay to ever put on a Yankee cap, whether for fun or not, isn’t sitting well with me. Good thing for us he’ll never wear one where it counts.
Anyone else see the irony of a DH giving hat advice to a catcher? He’s the only other guy not wearing a hat full-time since he never sees the field (outside an interleague game).
For a little payback, I’d like to see Jason Giambi trying to give Jason Varitek advice on hats… hmm, doesn’t work quite as well as I don’t think Yankee fans consider him to actually be one and the joke doesn’t work with Jeter…
Anyway, while I am at it, I will just comment on this past weekend’s sweep. It doesn’t mean nothing! No one has any right to get excited over any of it, except for maybe any A-Rod strikeout or the back-2-back-2-back-2-back jacks. Wait… is that even possible? Wouldn’t it be back-2-back back-2-back jacks? Hmm…
Turns out, that was the only game I watched this weekend. As a rule, I don’t much like watching Yankee games on TV. Too many closeups of players I can’t stand. I’m glad I did see this history making portion, but based on the fact they came off Chase Wright and not… well, I can’t name a good Yankee starter not hurt right now, so we’ll go with Roger Clemens… oh, wait, I guess Pettitte is there. Anyway, it was laughable.
It did, however, provide me with some personal gratification in that I have Manny and Tek on my horribly performing fantasy team and those jacks, along with D-Mat’s non-quality start for Juice, got me a win for the week. I think it doubly sucks for Juice since with ESPN’s flap to start the season, he was 2-0 before I tossed the first two weeks, so now after three, he is 0-1. Meanwhile, I am 1-0 instead of 1-2.
Even with ESPN’s mess up, their setup is still better than Yahoo this year. I am in one Yahoo league and you can’t even see today’s stats for your players without paying $10 for their StatTracker feature. You used to at least get them as static for each page load, but now nothing. ESPN is providing more features for free, that Yahoo charges for in most cases, and now may not even offer this year; like the ability to make transactions today instead of tomorrow. I don’t think I’ll be playing Yahoo anymore as my football league is already on ESPN.
Finally, thank you to Juice for sending the link and inspiring me to write a post. It started as an Aside and then I got going. I’ll have some Sox photos up later in the week from the Angel’s game I went to last week. They are off my camera, but I need to do some Photoshop work.

What a sad, bitter man. You wrote:

…and here I thought our Baseball Commish knew something about this game of Baseball.
Doesn’t mean nothing? Let’s see – you play a division rival 18 times a year. In order to Win in your division – you need to win more games than the other teams in your division – and at playoff time – in case of a tie – you need to win more games against your division rvials. That tells me that every friggin’ game counts for something. Three wins now is three more you may not need down the line. Try telling the Yanks this means nothing. From their perspective, they’re already three in the hole.
It’s like those guys who say, it’s only April. Again, every friggin’ win in April is one less you may not need in September.
I’m not saying that a sweep of the Yanks in April means we are a lock for the ALCS – that’s just pure folly – but every little bit counts.
I think what really stirred my ire is the pure pessimism this post was drenched in. Honestly, what’s wrong about being happy and excited for something. It’s like you’re pissed off that people are excited about something. Why would someone else’s happiness make you that angry? That’s not a good modus operendi. Eventually it wears on you – and the next thing you know – your heart is three times too small.
Bottom line – lighten up and enjoy your team’s success and don’t begrudge those who get a charge out of every win. Yes – I am on record – I thought it was a fanastic weekend of baseball. Bad pitching by the Yanks or not – those were three tremendously entertaining games and I am happy to have seen them. If you’re skipping Sox-Yabnks games on TV then really – you may want to start following Manchester United.
If you can’t enjoy a Win in April then you dont deserve a Win in October.

I just re-read my last post. While the message remains the same (as Peter Gammons once said “Watch the Games!!!”) I think some of my tongue-in-cheek comments come off a bit mean-spirited – specifically the sad, bitter man comment. So you can take that one as some playful ribbing – but the rest you should read as cautionary tale. Don’t you dare tell me not to enjoy every game of baseball no matter what month it was played in and who was on the mound. Hell – the Yanks got to tee off on our scrubs for years so if we get to ruin their kiddies first run through the Bigs – then all the better.

I have to agree with Ed–pennant race aside (gasp!), this weekend offered some classic baseball. Both teams played fought like dogs and had their ups and downs, and then our boys came out on top. Awesome stuff.

And where did you learn your grammar? “Don’t mean nothing!” Yup, that can only be a product of the Rockland school system.

I’ll admit that I lost my way a little bit as I was hastily typing it up to catch Heroes.
The gist was anyone all excited that we swept the Yankees in April and had a thought that we were going to pwn them this year is dead wrong. I suppose what got me going down that track was watching Access Hollywood last night — hey, it was on in the NTB waiting room as I was getting a new battery — and Maria Menounos declared that “our Red Sox” had swept at some awards show while presenting Dane Cook with some award. I heart on Maria, but hate on Dane, so I was angered by it… but not quite to the degree as if it were Affleck, who is probably hardcore enough to know not to make such boasts in the first place.
As far as watching the games go, it is usually when they are in the Bronx that I can’t watch. That geez announcer, the crowd, the soundsystem… they all drive me nuts. That was why I told you I wasn’t watching Friday night on XBL, when you showed. I listened to part of the game on the radio Saturday and watched most of Sunday’s before the eighth. Anyway, I do watch the games when I feel like it, but not every one like I used to and that has been the case since they won the Series. I’m not complacent or at a loss for interest, but it is harder to watch in the Spring. I don’t think I am alone here.
And yes, all games matter and every win counts towards the bottom line. Your point to the importance of divisional wins is rock solid and speaking of which, they are already looking rotten against the Jays again this year. Anyway, I didn’t mean to imply otherwise.
Lastly, the grammar was intentionally poor. It was meant to sound as if a New Yorker were saying it, because you know that they are…
Oh, and let’s not forget, bitterness and pessimism are still hallmarks of many Red Sox fans; series win or not…

Sweeping the Yankees in April doesn’t mean we’re going to win the Series, but the fact that we haven’t swept them at Fenway in 17 years is definitely worth a mention.
What a great clip! I don’t particularly care for Jorge, but luckily Ortiz and Wally take the spotlight.

That’s a good point and it is interesting that it had been so long. I think we swept them in the Bronx fairly recently too… o’course, that could have been a long time coming too.
