Magneto
As you may have begun to notice, I get my entertainment news in two forms, my copy of Entertainment Weekly and an E! Online portlet/gadget/widget on my Google page.
Anyway, E! Online is providing me with news of a Magneto solo flick spin-off from the X-Men movies. Set to be an origin piece, this is the way to go for sure. Heck, McKellen might pass on by the time they make it… (that’s not very nice). The Magneto origin is a good one to appeal to a wide audience and exploring his early relationship with Xavier is something that I have always found interesting in the books.
I’m more interested in seeing this spin-off than the Wolverine one.

David Goyer (Dark City, Batman Begins) is writing and directing which is a good start. I’ve read that they will recast Magneto with someone younger although McKellan does appear as well (must be a flashback device). The weird thing is the plot follows a young Magneto as he gets revenge against the Nazi’s who killed his parents which sounds suspiciously like the recently released Hannibal Rising – exact same plot. While this may have come from Magneto’s origin, I was surprised to see two similarly plotted films so close to each other. Wait – what am I talking about? Once upon a time we had dueling killer asteroid movies.

My take on the article is that McKellen, as old Magneto, will be barely be in it because they will be focusing on the past. I think that’s good and Goyer’s involvement is exciting. I’m not familiar with the Hanibal crap, but the plot they outline is inline with the Magneto origin in the comics.
