Posts where you might imagine me standing upon a soapbox being pelted by fruit. Like before there were internets.

Red State Stupidity

I have been thinking about this since I read it yesterday. How dumb are these Red Staters? They go into a Dunkie and want doughnuts? What kind of Homer J. Simpson… er, yeah, he likey doughnuts.

Anyway, some of these people are *cultured* enough to drink a coffee from the Starbies across the street, but they have to be transplants, just not from the Northeast.

Still, makes you wonder if this will catch on down there. I don’t think they are changing the name to Dunkin Coffee for you to get it Cletus…

Reynolds Tossed

I was pretty bummed out to hear that Harold Reynolds was fired by ESPN earlier in the week. Besides Peter Gammons, Harold was my favorite part of watching Baseball Tonight. When they had Karl Ravech, Bobby Valentine (or Buck Showalter), Harold and Peter on all at the same time, it was must-watch because they had a great dynamic.

The show hasn’t quite been the same since Buck or Bobby got back to managing and we now have to deal with John Kruk. Peter had already been increasingly absent and this year was doing the Sunday game of the week before his aneurysm, so I had already been missing the show more often than not. The guys they have been bringing in have, well… let’s just say are very boring and suck.

Anyway, I obviously thought Harold brought a lot to the table and I’m pretty sure I’ll watch even less than I already was now that he is gone too. Reporting on the exact cause has been spotty at best, but according to Harold himself, it was for ... Continue reading »

Veto This!

As soon as I read this passed today, I knew Bush would veto it. That clown has his religious beliefs all up in our grills again and it is going to cost the research community.

Never mind that “opinion polls show strong public support” for the expansion of research. Hey, our majority public vote didn’t want him in office and yet, we still have him, so I guess that’s the way these things go. Let’s not put our best efforts forward to cure many diseases on the basis of religious morality. The little embryos will never become babies, but they can’t serve a greater purpose either.

I am definitely not a political person, and I will almost never comment on it, but this just gets me boiling. I just had to get it off my chest. I surely hope a donkey wins in 2008, because I’m fed up with this shiznit.

Switchgrass

I read an article on C|Net today that Shell calls food crop biofuels ‘morally inappropriate.’ This is, of course, true but what is also true is the Shell company is being pretty hypocritical when making such a statement. I can take them on the face value, but under that is the fact that they still are a very large supplier of fossil fuel based products.

I’m no expert on the subject, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night, so instead of whatever thing Shell is coming up with, why not focus on Switchgrass. I’m kidding about the Holiday Inn, but I did watch a show on the Discovery channel last week that quickly went over this as a biofuel alternative to stuff we actually eat. You can read about it on that Wikipedia link, but the thing that is attractive about it is it grows fast, is a perennial,... Continue reading »

Shuttle Launch

Pepsi shuttle saluteThe Space Shuttle was launched on Indepedence Day for the first time ever and I have posted some photos taken at the Johnson Space Center almost three years ago to commemorate. The photo on the left is of a 25 year old can of Pepsi given to me that long ago by my Uncle David who purchased it at Edwards AFB and brought it home for me. More about the can and another picture in my Flickr photostream.

It’s a great thing that they finally got back up after almost a year off and hopefully the crew and vehicle both make it home safely. I think everyone understands the risks the astronauts take when they fly and we should all be thankful that... Continue reading »

Rotten Apple

I have been meaning to post on this for a while, I just keep forgetting. Not unusual for me.

Anyway, most folks have seen the latest ads on the telly by Apple. I guess these are version 2.0 of their famous “Switch” ads from a couple years ago. If you haven’t seen them and you are absolutely dying to know what I am talking about, then by all means go and visit the Apple web site and watch them all. I’ll patiently wait here. I got nothing better to do.

Okay, if you are reading this far, you have seen one or left and actually came back! (Thanks)

So, what did you think? How do these ads speak to you? I mean, other than the fact they want you to switch and use a Mac instead of a PC… cuz they said that, right? Did the slacker kid from NBC’s underrated series Ed — wait, wait… you are probably more familiar with his role in Dodgeball — convince you to buy a Mac? You don’t want to be that dork with the specs, right? Just cuz y... Continue reading »

The Future is Hot

When you read things like this, it should make you stop and think about becoming a tree-hugger. It also makes you realize that those of us who consider ourselves pretty smart, aren’t so smart because there are people in the World so much smarter than you and they work on things that matter. It’s too bad we’ll never make it to that Star Trek Utopia on Earth deal. Well, maybe we will if we blow ourselves up first too…

Asshats in the Outfield

I am bummed out to have to write a sequel to this post, but the asshats have demanded it. Yes, I attended my second Sox game of the year tonight and it was against the hated Yankees. Schilling took the hill against Chien-Ming Wang. Do you see where this is going?

Okay, so yes, it is a Yankee game and folks are more liquored up and passionate than for a Seattle Mariners game, but come on! Okay, I can’t help it… that just set up for a joke about an activity being suggested at that Mariners game. I swear, it just happened!

Anyway, we know everyone hates the Yankees, right? How does the chant go? Yankees Stink… no, that’s not quite it… So, yes, most folks are rev’d up for some extra razzing. Sure, tell Bernie Williams he’s old and his guitar playing stinks because he can’t hear it anymore... Continue reading »

Barry Hit 616

So, Barry finally hit 714 and tied the Babe. Patrick Hruby argues he hit 616 over on Page 2 of espn.com. I’d have to agree. I wanted to do some math and figure out how many he might have hit without the juice for my original post, but was way lazy. Hruby and friends have done it for me and you know what? The math adds up for me.

Barry Mushroom Head

Ruth did it on hotdogs and beer

I have mixed feelings on this post, but I figured why not run it. It’s something I’ve been thinking about and Juice sent me that picture the other day. I also saw a funny one of people holding up a single asterisk each, probably from the same game. Maybe the final straw was reading this piece by Tom Verducci today. What angered me most about it was how he treated the soldier that has the last ball he hit out. Anyway, here’s what I was thinking…

There’s a chance that Barry Bonds will tie Babe “The White Guy” Ruth tonight with his 714th home run. A lot of baseball fans are up in arms that this is going to happen. Honestly, before the season started I was too. I hoped that his knees would have prevented him from playing this... Continue reading »
